UW-La Crosse Falls at Fifth-Ranked UW-Oshkosh

Ryan Kruser set career-highs in catches (12) and yards (100) Saturday.
Box Score Oshkosh, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse football team fell 51-29 at fifth-ranked UW-Oshkosh Saturday afternoon at J.J. Keller Field at Titans Stadium.  The Eagles drop to 5-4 overall and 2-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Titans improve to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in the conference.  UW-Oshkosh earned its sixth straight win over UWL.

After UWL was forced to punt on the game's opening possession, UW-Oshkosh took a 6-0 lead on a 23-yard touchdown run from Mitch Gerhartz with 10:32 left in the first quarter.  Eli Wettstein's extra-point attempt was missed as the Titans went 70 yards in seven plays in 3:14.  The Eagles' Tarek Yaeggi was intercepted by Johnny Eagan on the game's next possession.  Wettstein gave UW-Oshkosh a 9-0 lead with 4:47 remaining with a 48-yard field goal.  The drive went 29 yards in eight plays and 3:16.

UWL responded on the next possession to cut the lead to 9-7 as Joel Oxton recovered Yaeggi's fumble at the UW-Oshkosh one-yard line and scored with 2:52 left.  Joshua Fischer's extra-point made it 9-7 as the Eagles went 80 yards in five plays and 1:55.  Yaeggi was 2-for-2 for 53 yards on the drive.  UW-Oshkosh scored on its third straight possession to start the game as Brett Kasper hit CJ Blackburn with an 11-yard touchdown pass with 13:23 remaining in the second quarter to make it 16-7.  UW-Oshkosh went 69 yards in nine plays and 4:29.

Ben Schramski was intercepted by Rajon Hall on UWL's next drive and Dylan Hecker scored on a two-yard run with 9:39 left in the second quarter to give the Titans a 23-7 lead.  UW-Oshkosh went 25 yards in seven plays and 3:01.  A.J. Day returned the ensuing kickoff 32-yards to the UW-Oshkosh 42-yard line and UWL took advantage as Yaeggi threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Nick Holcomb with 5:41 remaining in the first half to cut the lead to 23-14.  The Eagles went 58 yards in 10 plays and 3:58.

UW-Oshkosh led 23-14 at halftime.  The Titans took a 30-14 advantage with 8:09 left in the third quarter as Kasper threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Grant after going 44 yards in six plays and 2:50.  The Eagles cut the deficit to 30-22 with 2:18 remaining in the quarter with Oxton catching a 15-yard touchdown pass from Yaeggi.  Samuel Zwieg caught Yaeggi's two-point conversion to make it one a possession game.  The drive went 85 yards in 13 plays and 5:51.

The Titans responded with Blackburn scoring on a 45-yard run with :43 left in the third quarter for a 37-22 lead.  UW-Oshkosh went 68 yards in five plays and 1:35.  After forcing a UWL punt early in the final quarter, Chad Walton scored on a one-yard run for UW-Oshkosh to make it 44-22 with 11:42 remaining.  The Titans went 49 yards in seven plays and 3:02.  A 14-yard punt by UWL gave UW-Oshkosh the ball at the Eagles' 34-yard line and Blackburn's two-yard touchdown run gave the Titans a 51-22 lead with 7:54 left.  UW-Oshkosh went 34 yards in six plays and 3:15.

UWL finished the scoring with 4:42 remaining as Yaeggi connected with Ryan Kruser on a 10-yard touchdown pass to cut it to 51-29.  The Eagles went 80 yards in 11 plays and 3:12.

UWL finished with 382 yards of offense Saturday, including 97 rushing and 285 passing.  The Eagles had 20 first downs while going six-of-14 on third-down and one-of-two on fourth-down.  UWL was four-of-four in the red-zone.

Yaeggi went 27-of-44 for 285 yards with three touchdowns and one interception while Schramski finished 0-of-3 with an interception.  Kruser set career-highs with 12 receptions and 100 yards and one touchdown while Oxton (65 yards, one touchdown) and Zwieg (59 yards) each caught five passes.  Holcomb finished with three receptions for 49 yards and one touchdown.

UW-Oshkosh totaled 528 yards, including 364 rushing and 164 passing.  The Titans had 32 first downs while going six-of-12 on third-down and one-of-four on fourth-down.  UW-Oshkosh won the time of possession, 36:09 to 23:51.  The team was five-of-five in the red-zone.

Kasper finished 19-of-26 for 164 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.  Gerhartz totaled 100 yards rushing on 10 attempts (one touchdown) while Hecker finished with 93 yards on 16 carries (one touchdown) and Blackburn 92 yards on nine attempts (two touchdowns).  Blackburn also caught seven passes for 70 yards and one touchdown.

Ryan Weber led UWL's defense with 17 tackles, including nine unassisted.  Peter Krien had 11 tackles with eight unassisted and 1.0 quarterback sack.  Cameron Brown led UW-Oshkosh with six tackles.

UWL wraps up its regular season Saturday, November 12 hosting 11th-ranked UW-Platteville at 1 p.m. at Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.  It is Senior Day and Veterans Day.
