Box Score Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team opened its 2016 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) season with a 5-0 victory at UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon at Point Soccer Bowl. The Eagles improve to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in the WIAC while the Pointers drop to 4-7 overall and 0-1 in the WIAC.
It is UWL's fifth shutout of the season.
UWL scored a pair of first half goals as it finished with 19 shots in the period.
Alex Cording notched her third goal of the season at 14:00 with an assist from
Natalie Herzog to give UWL a 1-0 lead. Herzog made it 2-0 at 23:45 assisted by Margaret Harrings and
Haley Hartkemeyer.
The Eagles tallied three goals in the second half. Cording gave UWL a 3-0 lead at 50:27 assisted by Haley Stephens. It was Cording's fourth goal of the year. UWL took a 4-0 lead at 76:57 as
Cassie Handrick scored her first goal of the season at 76:57 assisted by
Maddie Granos. Granos added her first goal of the year at 86:14 assisted by
Ashley Osmek for a 5-0 lead.
UWL finished with 33 shots in the game, including 17 on goal. UW-Stevens Point totaled nine shots, including four on goal.
Kennedy Brault (65:08) and
Abbi Burke (24:52) combined on the shutout with Brault recording three saves and Burke one.
Sarah Peplinski finished with seven saves for UW-Stevens Point with Olivia Mecham recording five.
UWL returns to action Sunday, October 2 hosting St. Norbert College (Wis.) at 2 p.m.
