UW-Whitewater 3, Washington University (Mo.) 0La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater stayed alive at the NCAA Division III Baseball Midwest Regional with a 3-0 win over Washington Uinversity (Mo.) Friday afternoon at Copeland Park. The Warharks improve to 35-10 on the season and advance to play Concordia University-Chicago (Ill.) Saturday, May 16 at noon in an elimination game. Washington (Mo.) finishes its season with a 34-16 record.
UW-Whitewater, the defending national champions, took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of third as Nick Kuhlmann scored on a Mikole Pierce single.
The Warhawks added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth as Will Helbing scored from first on a Trey Cannon double to make it 2-0. UW-Whitewater increased the lead to 3-0 in the sixth inning with Steve Chamberlain scoring on a Adam Gregory single.
Washington (Mo.) had its first two runners on base in the top of the eighth, but failed to score and were shutout for the third time this season.
Lake Bachar (7-1) earned the complete-game shutout for UW-Whitewater, going 9.0 innings, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out four. Pierce finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and stolen base for the Warhawks while Cannon went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI.
Julian Clarke (5-3) took the loss for Washington (Mo.) as he also pitched a complete-game. Clarke went 8.0 innings, allowing eight hits, three runs and two walks with three strikeouts. Andrew Goldstick went 2-for-3 for the Bears with a stolen base. Zack Kessinger had his consecutive streak of reaching base snapped at 54 games as he finished 0-for-4.
