UW-Whitewater 2, Saint John's University (Minn.) 0La Crosse, Wis. - Top-seeded and third-ranked UW-Whitewater stayed alive Thursday at the NCAA Division III Baseball Midwest Regional at Copeland park, defeating Saint John's University (Minn.) 2-0. UW-Whitewater moves to 34-10 on the season and will play Friday, May 15 at 1:15 p.m. against the loser of the UW-La Crosse/Washington University (Mo.) game scheduled for 7:45 p.m. Thursday. Saint John's (Minn.) ends its season at 26-16.
The game stayed scoreless until the top of the seventh when UW-Whitewater finally getting on the board. Raul Anaya pinch ran for Will Helbing, who had singled up the middle with one out in the frame. Anaya stole second and advanced to third on a groundout. Trey Cannon followed with a two-out single up the middle scoring Anaya to give the Warhawks the 1-0 advantage.
UW-Whitewater added an insurance run in the ninth. Mike Mierow singled up the middle to open the inning and moved to second on sacrifice bunt by Kevin White. A Nick Kuhlman ground out to shortstop advanced Mierow to third. Cannon was hit-by-pitch putting runners on the corners. Saint John's (Minn.) pitcher Collin Felhaber threw over to first to keep Cannon close and Mierow broke for home and scored to give UW-Whitewater a 2-0 lead.
A two-out double from Mike Stegora gave Saint John's (Minn.) a chance in the bottom of the ninth, but a ground out to third base ended the hopes of the Johnnies.
Colin Grove (9-2) earned the win for UW-Whitewater, pitching a complete-game. He went 9.0 innings, scattering eight hits while striking out one. Grove leads the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in earned run average (2.26) and wins.
Cannon went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two stolen bases for the Warhawks. Helbing also had two hits for UW-Whitewater.
Felhaber (6-2) took the loss for Saint John's (Minn.), also throwing a complete-game. He went 8.0 innings, allowing six hits, two runs and four walks and five strikeouts. Aaron Pfaff went 3-for-4 for the Johnnies with Tom Druk finishing 2-for-4.
