Box Score Platteville, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team fell 64-61 at UW-Platteville Wednesday night on Bo Ryan Court. The Eagles finish the season 11-14 overall and 6-10 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Pioneers improve to 16-8 overall and 9-6 in the conference.
The Eagles got off to a 9-0 run to start the game, capped by a
Skylar Cameron three-pointer with 14:36 remaining in the half. The Pioneers answered with a 10-2 run of their own to cut the score to 11-10 with 12:47 left. UW-Platteville took the lead for the first time with 1:27 remaining after a Matt Oestreich three-pointer, making it 31-30 at halftime.
The second half featured nine ties and 11 lead changes. The Eagles led by as many as five after a
Trent Schmidt three-point field goal made it 48-43 with 9:56 remaining. With 5:52 left, Jake Manning made a lay-up and was fouled on the play. His free throw tied the game at 50-50.
A Cameron three-pointer was answered by UW-Platteville to tie it again at 53-53 with 4:47 to go, and a Manning lay-up was answered by Cameron to make it 55-55 with 3:32 left.
Jared Staege put the Eagles ahead 57-55 with 2:48 to go, but the Pioneers again tied the game at 57-57 after a pair of free throws at the 2:12 mark.
UW-Platteville took the lead for good after Oestreich's lay-up and free throw after a foul made it 60-57 with 1:24 remaining in the game.
Clint Rihn made a pair of free throws to make it 60-59 with 1:10 left, and Cameron made a lay-up after a pair of Pioneers free throws to cut it to 62-61 with :09 left.
Manning put UW-Platteville back up 64-61 after two more free throws with :06 to play, and
Cale Zuiker's attempted three-pointer with :01 remaining was no good.
UW-L shot 42.6% from the field, including 31.0% (nine-of-29) from three-point range, and 66.7% (six-of-nine) at the free throw line. Cameron led the Eagles with 18 points and six rebounds. Staege added 13 points. Schmidt and
Tom Jankowski had three assists each for UW-L.
UW-Platteville shot 47.1% from the field, including 18.8% (three-of-16) from three-point range, and 81.3% (13-of-16) at the line. Manning had 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Pioneers. Oestreich added 15 points and Cory Vaassen had 13.
