Box Score River Falls, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team fell 64-59 to UW-River Falls Wednesday night in the Karges Center. The Eagles drop to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Falcons improve to 5-4 overall and stay undefeated in the conference at 3-0.
UW-River Falls never trailed in the game, getting out to a 6-0 lead before
Johnny Coenen hit a jumper with 16:02 remaining in the first half to get UW-L on the board. The Falcons lead extended to 12-2 with 13:03 remaining after a pair of free throws by CJ Lewis. UW-River Falls led 19-5 with 7:54 left after a Connor Goodwin layup when UW-L went on a 10-0 run to make it 19-15 with 3:17 remaining. The Falcons answered with a 11-3 run to lead 30-18 at halftime.
The Falcons led by as many as 15 points at 41-26 with 14:08 remaining in the game after a Grant Erickson layup. UW-River Falls led 55-41 with 4:22 left when UW-L used a 11-3 run to cut the lead to 58-52 with 1:42 left on a Coenen three-pointer. The Eagles could get no closer than five points the rest of the game as the Falcons went eight-of-10 at the free throw down the stretch.
UW-L shot 35.2% from the field, including 32.0% (eight-of-25) from three-point range and 81.3% (13-of-16) at the free throw line.
Skylar Cameron led the Eagles with 14 points.
Cale Zuiker added 12 points, Coenen 10 and
Kenny Finco eight. Zuiker recorded a double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds.
Jared Staege and
Connor De Bruin each had three assists.
UW-River Falls was 50.0% from the floor, including 27.3%(three-of-11) from beyond the arc, and 61.9% (13-of-21) at the line.
Jon Christensen led the Falcons with 12 points and eight rebounds. Connor Goodwin added 10 points and seven rebounds.
UW-L returns to action Saturday, December 20 hosting Bethel University (Minn.) in Mitchell Hall at 3 p.m.
