Box Score La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team fell 56-52 to city-rival Viterbo University (Wis.) Tuesday night in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles drop to 2-2 on the season while the V-Hawks improve to 4-4. Viterbo (Wis.) snaps a 10-game losing streak to UW-L with Tuesday's win, recording its first victory in the series since 2003.
UW-L led 14-5 with 10:35 remaining in the first half after a
Trent Schmidt layup. The Eagles took their biggest lead of the game at 21-11 with 5:18 left in the half, but the V-Hawks used a 11-2 run to cut the lead to 23-22 with 2:20 remaining. UW-L led 25-24 at halftime.
Viterbo (Wis.) led 31-30 with 17:27 left in the game on a Pete Drummond three-point field goal, but UW-L scored the next seven points of the game to lead 37-31 . The Eagles led 45-38 with 11:38 remaining after a
Kenny Finco three-pointer, but the V-Hawks went on a 12-0 run to lead 50-45 with 8:04 left. Jake Bamke and David Shepard hit back-to-back three-point field goals to give Viterbo (Wis.) a 46-45 advantage.
The Eagles missed seven straight shots from the field before Finco's jumper cut the deficit to 50-47 with 5:58 remaining. Erik Engelstad followed with a jumper in the paint to make it 52-47.
Cale Zuiker's three-pointer cut the lead to 52-50 with 4:08 left before Alex Diciaula's jumper gave the V-Hawks a four-point lead with 3:04 remaining. Zuiker's jumper cut it to 54-52 with 2:27 left, but UW-L missed its final four shots from the field and Diciaula's two free throws with :02 left finished the scoring. UW-L went two-of-11 from the field in the final 5:19.
UW-L shot 33.3% from the field, including 22.2% (six-of-27) from three-point range, and 85.7% (six-of-seven) at the free throw line.
Zuiker led the Eagles with 22 points, going eight-of-18 from the field, including three-of-10 from three-point range. He was three-of-three at the line. Finco finished with nine points while Schmidt added seven.
Jared Staege had a team-high six rebounds.
Viterbo shot 41.3% from the field, including 50.0% (nine-of-18) from three-point range, and 90.0% (nine-of-10) at the line.
Shepard led the V-Hawks with 17 points and 15 rebounds while Bamke finished with 12 points.
UW-L returns to action Saturday, November 29 hosting Central College (Iowa) at 3 p.m.
