Box Score Kenosha, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team earned a 81-67 victory at Carthage College (Wis.) Saturday night in Tarble Arena in the Carthage (Wis.) Classic Consolation Game. The Eagles improve to 2-1 on the season while the Red Men drop to 1-2. It was the first meeting between the two teams since 1979-80.
Carthage (Wis.) scored the basket of the game, but UW-L followed with a 13-2 run to lead 13-4 with 17:01 remaining in the first half. The Eagles made their first six shots from the field to lead 15-6 after a
Cale Zuiker jump shot. The Red Men went on an 11-0 run to lead 17-15 with 11:24 left on a Reese Herth three-pointer. Carthage (Wis.) later led 25-21, but UW-L used an 13-0 run of its own to lead 34-25 with 4:20 remaining.
Skylar Cameron scored eight points and Zuiker five in the Eagles' run.
UW-L led 34-30 at halftime.
The Red Men cut the deficit to 43-41 with 15:51 remaining in the game after a Ellis Matthews' three-point field goal, but Carthage (Wis.) could get no closer the rest of the game. UW-L went on a 13-4 run to lead 56-45 with 11:55 left. The Red Men could get no closer than 10 points the rest of the game as the Eagles led by as many as 23 at 77-54 with 4:10 remaining.
UW-L shot 47.2% from the field, including 51.7% (15-of-29) from three-point range, and 88.2% (15-of-17) at the free throw line.
Cameron led the Eagles with a career-high 31 points, finishing eight-of-13 from the field, including seven-of-11 from three-point range. He was eight-of-eight at the line. Cameron scored a then career-high 23 points in UW-L's 70-68 loss to Aurora University (Ill.) Friday night.
Zuiker finished with a career-high 27 points Saturday, going 10-of-17 from the field, including five-of-10 from three-point range. He was two-of-three at the line.
Trent Schmidt added eight points while
Kenny Finco had seven points and team-leading five rebounds.
Carthage (Wis.) shot 42.9% from the field, including 44.4% (eight-of-18) from three-point range, and 68.0% (17-of-25) at the line.
Matthews led the Red Men with 15 points while Herth finished with 14 and Mike Kastel with 13. Kastel had a game-high eight rebounds.
UW-L returns to action Tuesday, November 25 hosting city-rival Viterbo University (Wis.) at 7:30 p.m. in Mitchell Hall in the Eagles' home opener.
