UW-L Drops WIAC Game at Nationally-Ranked UW-Stevens Point

UW-L recorded 6.0 tackles for loss and forced five turnovers Saturday afternoon.
Box Score Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of, Wisconsin-La Crosse football team fell 24-17 at 19th-ranked UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon at Community Field at Goerke Park. The Eagles drop to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Pointers improve to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference. UW-Stevens Point, ranked 19th on this week's D3football.com Top-25 Poll, broke a three-game losing streak to UW-L.

UW-Stevens, Point took a 7-0 lead with 8:32 left in the opening quarter as Kyle Larson threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Matt Sosinsky. The touchdown came on the first play from scrimmage after the Pointers' Deion Jones returned a punt 28-yards.

The teams traded interceptions on the next two possessions as UW-L's Trent Cummings was intercepted by Mike Longmeyer at the Eagles' 41-yard line and Larson was intercepted by Jon Becker in the UW-L end-zone. The Eagles drove 61 yards in nine plays and 3:53 on the ensuing drive, with Eric Wittkowske hitting a 35-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3 with 1:49 left in the first quarter. Eric Rahman had a 69-yard run on the drive.

UW-L took a 10-7 lead in the second quarter with Cummings connecting with Ben Hertrampf on a 34-yard touchdown pass on third-and-10 with 2:18 left. The Eagles went 49 yards on six plays and 2:07.

Larson was intercepted by UW-L's Jacob Flegner on the next drive with Flegner returning it 25-yards for a touchdown. The return gave UW-L a 17-7 advantage with 1:49 remaining in the first half. On the ensuing drive, UW-Stevens Point was forced to punt with UW-L taking over at its own 30-yard line with 1:10 remaining, but Cummings was intercepted by Jones at the UW-Stevens Point 42-yard line. The Pointers went 46 yards on nine plays and 1:10 as Jesse Vervelde hit a 29-yard field goal on the last play of the first half to cut the Eagles' lead to 17-10.

The teams combined for eight turnovers in the first half. UW-L had three interceptions while UW-Stevens Point turned the ball over five times, including four interceptions.

Cummings was intercepted by Zach Vallafskey at the UW-L 22-yard line with 8:59 remaining in the third quarter. UW-Stevens Point tied the contest at 17-17 with 6:24 left as DeJuan Wright scored on a two-yard touchdown run. The Pointers went 22 yards on five plays and 2:40 with Wright rushing for 15 of the 22 total yards.

After taking over at its own eight-yard line on the first drive of the fourth quarter, UW-L drove to its 44-yard line, but Bo Seibel recovered Hertrampf's fumble with 9:46 left in the game. Ten plays later, Wright scored his second touchdown of the half on a one-yard run with 4:27 remaining to give UW-Stevens Point a 24-17 advantage. The drive went 44 yards on 10 plays and 5:24. Wright rushed for 36 yards on the drive.

UW-L was forced to punt on its next possession, but the Eagles forced a UW-Stevens Point with just over a minute remaining. UW-L took over at its own five-yard line and drove to its 35-yard line, but Cummings was sacked by Aaron Karlen with the Pointers' Jordon Denfeld recovering the ball on the final play of the game.

UW-L totaled 238 yards of offense, including 97 rushing and 141 passing. Rahman had 75 yards rushing on four attempts (18.8 average) while Hertrampf finished with 19 yards on 16 carries. Cummings was 12-of-40 passing for 141 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions. Tony Bilderback caught four passes for 58 yards while Hertrampf had three receptions for 43 yards and a touchdown. Joel Oxton caught three passes for 21 yards.

The Eagles finished with 13 first downs while going five-of-18 on third-down and one-of-one on fourth-down. UW-L finished with six turnovers in the game (four interceptions, two fumbles).

UW-Stevens Point finished with 240 yards of offense, including 134 rushing and 106 passing. Wright totaled 131 yards rushing on 29 attempts and two touchdowns. Larson finished eight-of-22 passing for 94 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions. Cody Nuernberg went two-of-three for 12 yards. Sosinsky caught six passes for 77 yards and a touchdown.

The Pointers totaled 12 first downs while finishing five-of-19 on third-down and one-of-one on fourth down. UW-Stevens, Point finished with the five first half turnovers (four interceptions, one fumble) while leading the time of possession, 33:30 to 26:30.

Jake Perner led UW-L's defense with 11 tackles while Zackary Kleven finished with nine tackles, including 3.5 for loss and 1.0 quarterback sack. Shane Rockweiler had eight tackles. The Eagles had 6.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks in the game. Jon Becker recorded two interceptions while Noah Risch and Flegner had one.

Jake Luedtke led UW-Stevens Point with eight tackles, including 2.5 for loss. The Pointers recorded 9.0 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks. Jones finished with two interceptions.

UW-L, returns to action Saturday, November 1 at UW-River Falls at 1 p.m.
