UW-La Crosse Falls on Late Shot at UW-Stout

Box Score Menomonie, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team fell 59-57 at UW-Stout Wednesday night in Johnson Fieldhouse.  The Eagles drop to 10-5 overall and 4-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Blue Devils improve to 9-6 overall and 4-3 in the conference.  It is UW-Stout's third win in the last 16 meetings with UW-L.

The game was tied 5-5 with 16:13 left in the first half after UW-L's Trent Schmidt hit a three-point field goal. The Eagles went on a 8-2 run to lead 13-7 with Braden Tice scoring five points.  UW-Stout later took a 24-22 lead with 4:42 remaining, but UW-L used a 10-2 run to lead 32-26.  The Eagles led 34-30 at halftime.

UW-L opened the second half on a 10-2 run to lead 44-32 with 15:28 remaining. The Eagles made four of their first six shots from the field in the second half, including a pair of three-point field goals from Luke Tweed.  After a timeout, UW-Stout scored the game's next nine points to cut the deficit to 44-41 with 11:58 left. 

UW-L later led 51-45 with 5:58 remaining after a pair of Braden Tice free throws, but UW-Stout scored six straight points to force a 51-51 tie with 2:35 left.  Tice gave the Eagles a three-point lead on a three-point field goal with 2:02 remaining, but Jay Higgins cut the lead to 54-53 with 1:29 left for the Blue Devils with a jumper.  

Calahan Skogman made a three-point field goal for UW-L with :55 remaining to make it 57-53.  UW-Stout's Alex Oman cut the margin to 57-56 with :34 left on a three-point field goal.  Tice was fouled with :19 left, but missed the free throw.  UW-Stout's Adam Wadzinski then hit a go-ahead three-point field goal with :01 remaining to give the Blue Devils the 59-57 win.

UW-L shot 40.4% from the field, including 37.0% (10-of-27) from three-point range, and 75.0% (nine-of-12) at the free throw line.

Lucas Collom led the Eagles with 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists while Tice finished with 15 points.  Tweed had eight points. 

UW-Stout shot 46.3% from the field, including 26.7% (four-of-15) from three-point range, and 50.0% (five-of-10) at the line. 

Oman led the Blue Devils with 17 points and seven rebounds while Higgins finished with 11 points and six rebounds. 

UW-L returns to action Saturday, January 18 at UW-Platteville at 7 p.m.
