La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball wrapped up its 2012-13 regular season with a 83-79 victory over UW-Superior Saturday afternoon in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles improve to 17-8 overall and 10-6 in the WIAC while the Yellowjackets fall to 9-16 overall and 5-11 in the conference.
With the win, UW-L clinches the fourth seed for the WIAC Tournament. The Eagles will host fifth-seeded UW-Platteville in the first round of the tournament scheduled for Tuesday, February 19 at 7 p..m.
UW-Superior is the sixth seed for the league tournament and will travel to third-seeded UW-Stout Tuesday.
UW-L earned its sixth straight win over UW-Superior with Saturday's victory. Walter Charlton gave the Yellowjackets a 2-0 lead, but the Eagles'
Lucas Collom followed with a three-pointer and UW-L would never trail again. UW-L led by as many as 10 points in the first half, including 20-10 with 7:43 remaining. UW-Superior later cut the deficit to 28-27 with 1:45 left. UW-L led 34-31 at halftime.
The contest was tied 40-40 with 16:51 remaining after UW-Superior's Jarrod Peterson hit a three-point field goal. UW-L later led 52-48 with 12:40 left when it scored five points on one trip down the court. Collom was fouled after converting a layup. The Yellowjackets' Aaron Corry was called for a technical foul.
Braden Tice made both free throws and Collom completed the three-point play with his free throw to give UW-L a 57-48 advantage with 12:30 remaining.
UW-L led 63-54 with 9:24 left when UW-Superior went on a 10-2 run to make it 65-64 with 5:55 remaining. Collom had a three-point play with 5:38 left for a four-point Eagles' lead. UW-L later led 77-70 with 2:17 remaining, but UW-Superior cut it to 77-73 on a three-pointer from Johnquez Brooks with 2:06 left.
Tice made a pair free throws with :24 remaining for a 79-73 advantage, but Brooks hit another three-pointer with :20 left. UW-L's
Michael Barrett scored on a layup with :13 remaining before Austin Cahil made a three-pointer for UW-Superior to cut the deficit to 81-79 with :08 left.
Luke Tweed was fouled with :06 remaining and made both free throws to finish the scoring.
Collom tied his career-high with 20 points Saturday. He also scored 20 points versus UW-Superior last season. Collom recorded his second career-double Saturday, finishing with a team-high 11 rebounds to go along with his 20 points. He finished with a team-high three assists and three blocks Saturday while adding two steals.
Tweed also finished with 20 points Saturday, going seven-of-12 from the field, including three-of-four from three-point range. He was three-of-four at the line. Tweed tied Collom for the team lead with two steals.
Lucas Morrissey totaled 16 points and five rebounds while Tice finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.
UW-L shot 43.5% from the field, including 36.0% (nine-of-25) from three-point range. The Eagles shot 93.3% (14-of-15) at the free throw line.
Peterson led UW-Superior with 18 points while Brendan Bauer finished with 14 points and Trent Davis 10. Corry and Cahill each had nine points. Corry tied for the team lead with Charlton with eight rebounds.
UW-Superior shot 43.5% from the field, including 40.9% (nine-of-22) from three-point range. The Yellowjackets shot 72.7% (16-of-22) at the line.
UW-L returns to action Tuesday, February 19 hosting UW-Platteville at 7 p.m.
