Box Score St. Peter, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team earned a 73-58 win at Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) Tuesday afternoon at Gus Young Court. The Eagles improve to 9-3 on the season while the Gusties fall to 7-2. It was the first meeting between the teams since the 2011-12 season.
The game was tied 7-7 in the opening half when UW-L's
Lucas Collom hit a three-point field goal with 15:04 remaining. The Eagles would never trail again. Gustavus Adolphus cut the lead to 10-9, but UW-L went on a 8-2 run to lead 18-11 with 12:14 left. The Eagles led 33-30 at halftime.
UW-L scored the first four points of the second half on a jumper from
Luke Tweed and layup by
Calahan Skogman to make it 37-30, but Gustavus Adolphus went on a 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 39-38 with 14:21 left.
Gustavus Adolphus forced a 43-43 tie with 12:51 remaining after a pair of Martin Feddersen free throws. UW-L later led 50-49 with 9:41 left when the Eagles went on a 17-2 run to take a 67-51 advantage with 2:28 remaining. UW-L hit four-of-six shots from three-point range in the run, including a pair from Skogman. Gustavus Adolphus went one-of-seven from the field and had three turnovers in UW-L's run.
The Gusties could get no closer than 13 points in the final 2:00 of the game.
UW-L shot 47.3% from the field, including 45.8% (11-of-24) from three-point range, and 71.4% (10-of-14) at the free throw line.
Skogman finished with 26 points and nine rebounds for the Eagles while Tweed had 15 points, three blocks, two rebounds and two steals. Collom had 11 points, five rebounds and two assists.
Gustavus Adolphus shot 40.0% from the field, including 27.3% (three-of-11) from three-point range, and 40.0% (15-of-21) at the line.
Brody Ziegler led the Gusties with 13 points and nine rebounds while Feddersen finished wiht 11 points, five assists and four rebounds. Jordan Dick had nine points and five rebounds.
UW-L returns to action Saturday, January 4 at top-ranked UW-Stevens Point at 3 p.m.
