Box Score Decorah, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team fell 72-70 at Luther College (Iowa) Tuesday night in the Regents Center. The Eagles drop to 3-1 on the season while the Norse improve to 1-0 in their season-opener.
UW-L took a 15-14 lead with 11:04 left in the first half after a pair of
Lucas Collom free throws, but Luther used a 17-6 run to lead 31-21 with 6:23 remaining after a Cale Austin three-pointer. The Eagles'
Calahan Skogman hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to 31-24, but the Norse went on a 7-1 run to lead 38-25 with 4:19 left.
Luther led 49-35 at halftime.
The Eagles trailed 54-37 with 17:57 left in the game when they went on a 11-0 run to cut the deficit to 54-48 with 14:22 remaining. Luther later led 60-51 with 9:24 left, but UW-L cut the lead to 60-56 after a
Luke Tweed jumper.
The Norse took a 68-59 lead with 6:35 remaining on a Jake Martin jumper. Skogman made a three-pointer and
Braden Tice a jumper to make it 68-64 before Luther's Michael Crocker hit one-of-two free throws with 4:12 left for a 69-64 lead. Tice followed with a three-pointer with 2:47 remaining, but Aaron Huber made two free throws for Luther with 2:26 left for a 71-67 advantage.
Tice made his fifth three-pointer of the game to cut the lead to 71-70 with 1:14 remaining. The Norse and Eagles both missed a pair of shots from the field before Martin made one-of-two at the line with :11 left and 72-70 lead. UW-L's
Trent Schmidt missed a potential game-tying field goal at the buzzer.
UW-L shot 45.8% from the field, including 40.0% (10-of-25) from three-point range. The Eagles shot 50.0% (six-of-12) at the free throw line.
Skogman led UW-L with 21 points and three assists. Tice totaled 19 points, finishing seven-of-10 from the field, including five-of-seven from three-point range. Tweed finished with nine points and Collom eight.
Aaron Ziman and
Joe Sokovich each had six points. Sokovich also finished with a team-high six rebounds.
Luther shot 47.9% from the field, including 43.8% (seven-of-16) from three-point range. The Norse shot 82.6% (19-of-23) at the line.
John Androus led Luther with 18 points and nine rebounds while Martin finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. Bradley Wilkins also scored 11 points for the Norse.
UW-L returns to action Monday, November 25 at city-rival Viterbo University (Wis.) at 7 p.m.
