Superior, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team earned a 69-58 victory at UW-Superior Saturday afternoon in Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium. The Eagles, receiving votes on this week's D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll, improve to 7-1 overall and 2-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Yellowjackets drop to 2-6 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
UW-L led 14-8 with 12:55 left the first half after a
Cale Zuiker three-pointer. UW-Superior came back to go on a 9-2 run to take a 17-16 advantage.
Braden Tice gave UW-L a 19-17 lead with a three-point field goal with 7:58 left when it used a 13-2 run to lead 29-19 with 3:13 remaining in the half.
UW-Superior cut the lead to 29-27 with :41 left on a Johnquez Brooks jumper, but UW-L's
Lucas Morrissey hit a jumper with :09 remaining to make it 31-27 at halftime.
The Eagles led 41-35 early in the second half when the Yellowjackets went on a 8-0 run to lead 43-41. UW-L's
Jeff Heiden hit a three-point field goal with 15:10 remaining to give the Eagles a 44-43 lead. UW-Superior cut its deficit to 46-45 with 13:06 left when UW-L scored the game's next nine points to lead 55-45 with 7:18 remaining.
The Yellowjackets could get no closer than seven points the rest of the game.
Luke Tweed led UW-L with 20 points Saturday, going eight-of-12 from the field, including three-of-four from three-point range. He was two-of-three at the free throw line. Heiden finished with 16 points and four steals. Tice and Morrissey each had nine points with
Lucas Collom scoring eight. Tice was three-of-three from three-point range while Morrissey had six rebounds.
UW-L shot 50.0% from the field, including 55.6% (15-of-27) in the second half. The team shot 40.9% (nine-of-22) overall from three-point range, including five-of-10 (50.0%) in the second half. The Eagles shot 50.0% (four-of-eight) at the free throw line.
Bronson Byrne led UW-Superior with 16 points with Brendan Bauer scoring 12 and Jarred Peterson 11.
UW-Superior shot 54.2% from the field, including 57.1% (four-of-seven) from three-point range. The team shot 50.0% (two-of-four) from the free throw line.
UW-L returns to action Sunday, December 9 at Northland College (Wis.) at 3 p.m.
