La Crosse, Wis. - The UW-La Crosse football team, ranked 19th on this week's D3football.com Top-25 Poll, earned a 48-0 victory over NCAA Division II Missouri University of Science & Technology Saturday afternoon at Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles improve to 3-0 overall while the Miners drop to 0-4. The 3-0 start is the first for UW-L since 2006.
The 48-0 victory is the Eagles' largest margin of win by shutout since a 56-0 victory at Huron University in 1997. UW-L's last shutout came in 2007 with a 24-0 win over UW-Oshkosh.
UW-L finished with 501 yards of offense on 76 plays (6.6 average). The team totaled 228 yards rushing and 273 passing.
Reid Oldenburg scored three rushing touchdowns and finished with 96 yards on the ground on 18 carries.
Nick Anker and
Lee Lauters also had a rushing touchdown. Anker was 19-of-30 passing for 227 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.
Alex Maxinoski and
Travis Bordeau each caught seven passes for the Eagles. Maxinoski had a team-high 105 yards receiving while Bordeau finished with 84.
Kyle Steffen and
Ross Slovensky had touchdown receptions for UW-L.
The Eagles finished the game with 27 first downs, were six-of-10 on third-down and scored on seven-of-nine red-zone opportunities.
Anker gave the Eagles a 7-0 lead with 2:08 remaining in the first quarter on a seven-yard run. He then hit Steffen with an 11-yard touchdown pass with 7:37 left in the second quarter for a 14-0 lead and Oldenburg made it 21-0 at halftime on a 12-yard run with :23 left in the second.
Oldenburg had a pair of touchdown runs in the third quarter, scoring on a 12-yard dash with 11:30 remaining and on a one-yard run with 2:02 left. Lauters scored on a two-yard run with 11:47 left in the game and
Dan Trussoni hit Slovensky with a nine-yard pass with 9:41 remaining.
Missouri S&T drove inside UW-L's 10-yard line on its final two possessions, but failed to score as Jason Schlueter threw an incompletion at the Eagles' eight-yard line with 5:14 remaining and Steve Watson was sacked at the 10-yard line on the game's final play. The Miners were held to 214 yards, including 85 rushing and 129 passing.
Curterris Golden had six carries for 50 yards rushing while Schlueter was 14-of-27 passing for 115 yards and two interceptions. Bobby Pettis caught five passes for 61 yards for Missouri S&T. The Miners were held to 10 first downs and finished five-of-17 on third-down.
Matt Winney and
Dustin Drath led UW-L's defense with eight tackles each while
Jim Litscher finished with seven. Winney and
Billy Niggeman each recorded an interception while
Aaron Johnson totaled three tackles for loss. The Eagles had 13.0 tackles for loss in the contest, including three sacks.
Melvin Banks and Brian Jordan led Missouri S&T with six tackles.
UW-L returns to action Saturday, Oct. 3 hosting UW-Oshkosh in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener for both teams. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
