La Crosse, Wis. - The UW-La Crosse football team dropped its second straight game with a 35-28 loss to UW-Stout Saturday afternoon at Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles fall to 5-3 overall and 2-3 in the WIAC while the Blue Devils improve to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in the conference. UW-Stout has now won seven of the last 10 meetings with UW-L.
UW-L took the opening kickoff and went 73 yards on 14 plays to lead 7-0 as
Reid Oldenburg scored on a two-yard run. UW-Stout tied the contest on the first play of the second quarter as Ross Carey hit Patrick Mengelkoch with a six-yard touchdown pass.
Oldenburg gave the Eagles a 14-7 lead on UW-L's next possession as he scored on a 22-yard run with 12:36 left in the first half. After the teams traded possessions, the Blue Devils' Craig Warminski scored the first of his three rushing touchdowns on the day, running in from one-yard out to tie the game at 14-14 with 5:38 remaining in the second quarter.
Late in the first half, UW-L drove to UW-Stout's two-yard run, but
Dylan Rude missed a 20-yard field goal attempt and the game was tied 14-14 at halftime.
The Blue Devils took the second half kickoff and went 65 yards in 10 plays to lead 21-14. Warminski scored on a two-yard run to give UW-Stout the lead. UW-Stout later drove 99 yards in nine plays to take a 28-14 lead early in the final period as Carey scored on a 34-yard touchdown run.
UW-L came right back on its next possession to cut the lead to 28-21 as Oldenburg scored on a two-yard run with 10:05 left, but UW-Stout made it 35-21 with 7:16 remaining as Warminski scored on an 11-yard run.
After UW-L turned the ball over on downs, Warminski fumbled the ball at UW-Stout's 35-yard line and the Eagles'
Derek Dreher returned it 35-yards for a touchdown to cut the margin to 35-28 with 3:42 remaining.
UW-Stout's Kyle Martin missed a 42-yard field goal attempt with 1:11 left in the game and UW-L took over at its own 25-yard line. The Eagles drove to the Blue Devils' 27-yard line, but quarterback
Nick Anker was pressured by two UW-Stout defenders and Anker's final pass fell short as time expired.
UW-L finished with 430 yards of offense, including 218 rushing and 212 passing. Oldenburg had 180 yards rushing on 31 carries with three touchdowns. Anker was 22-of-38 passing for 212 yards while
Alex Maxinoski had eight receptions for 91 yards.
Travis Bordeau finished with seven catches for 61 yards.
UW-Stout totaled 433 yards, including 302 rushing and 131 passing. Carey had 161 yards rushing on 12 attempts (13.4 average) with a touchdown while Warminski finished with 128 yards rushing on 28 carries and three touchdowns. Carey was also 13-of-16 passing for 131 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Warminski caught a team-high four passes for 27 yards.
Aaron Johnson led UW-L with nine solo tackles with one tackle for loss and one forced fumble.
Phillip Minja recorded seven solo tackles while
Jim Litscher had seven total tackles (six solo) and one tackle for loss. Along with returning a fumble for a touchdown, the Eagles' Dreher had an interception.
Adam Churchill led UW-Stout with 12 tackles, including nine solo.
