Josh Buchholtz begins his 19th season as the UW-La Crosse head men’s track and field coach in 2026-27.

Awards, Honors and Highlights

  • 7x U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division III Men’s Outdoor National Head Coach of the Year (2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2024, 2025, 2026)
  • 6x USTFCCCA NCAA Division III Men’s Indoor National Head Coach of the Year (2013, 2014, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026)
  • 10x USTFCCCA Outdoor Region Coach of the Year (2012, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026)
  • 7x USTFCCA Indoor Region Coach of the Year (2012, 2013, 2014, 2019, 2024, 2025, 2026)
  • 10x Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Outdoor Coach of the Year and 6x WIAC Outdoor Coaching Staff of the Year.
  • 8x Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Coach of the Year (2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016,  and 6x WIAC Outdoor Coaching Staff of the Year.
  • Has led the Eagles to 14 NCAA III National Titles including seven indoor (2009, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2023, 2024, 2025) and seven outdoor (2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2024, 2025, 2026).
  • UWL has placed in the top-five nationally in 32 championships under Buchholtz.
  • Has led the Eagles to 32 WIAC Championships including 16 indoor (2009-2020, 2023-2026) and 16 outdoor (2009-2019, 2021, 2023-2026).
  • A total of 474 individual All-America honors (238 indoor; 236 outdoor) have been earned during Buchholtz’s time at UWL.
2026 
  • Led the Eagles to their third straight NCAA III Outdoor National Championship with a Championship meet record 106 points. Luke Schroeder (110-meter hurdles) and Joey Sullivan (3000-meter Steeplechase) won individual national championships.
  • Eagles finished second as a team at the NCAA III Indoor National Championships with 75 points. Carter Pearson (triple jump) and Collin Conzemius along with the 4x400-meter relay team won individual national titles.
  • Swept the WIAC Indoor and Outdoor Conference Championships for the fourth straight season.
  • Collin Conzemius was named the USTFCCCA NCAA III Indoor Track Athlete of the Year
  • Luke Schroeder qualified and competed at the USATF Outdoor Championships in the 110-meter hurdles.
2025
  • For the second straight season, Buchholtz and his staff led the Eagles to a sweep of both the NCAA III Indoor and Outdoor Championships.
  • Sam Blaskowski (100-meter, 200-meter) and Joey Sullivan (3,000-meter steeplechase) along with the 4x100-meter relay team won national titles at the Outdoor Championships.
  • Sam Blaskowski (60-meter, 200-meter), Cael Schoemann (800-meter) and Grant Matthai won national titles at the Indoor Championships.
  • Swept the WIAC Indoor and Outdoor Conference Championships for the third straight season.
  • Sam Blaskowski was named the USTFCCCA NCAA III Indoor and Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year
  • For the second straight season, Sam Blaskowsi qualified and competed at the USATF Indoor and Outdoor Championships in the 60-meter dash (indoor) and 100-meter dash (outdoor).
2024
  • For the first time since 2017 and 13th time in program history, Eagles swept the NCAA III Indoor and Outdoor championships.
  • Sam Blaskowski (100-meter, 200-meter) and Cael Schoemann (800-meter) won individual national titles at the Outdoor Championships.
  • Ethan Gregg (3,000-meter), Sam Blaskowski (60-meter, 200-meter) and Cael Schoemann (800-meter) won individual national titles at the Indoor Championships.
  • Swept the WIAC Indoor and Outdoor Conference Championships for the second straight season.
  • Sam Blaskowski swept the USTFCCCA NCAA III Indoor and Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year awards.
  • Sam Blaskowski qualified and competed at the United States Olympic Trials in the 100-meter dash. He also qualified and competed at the USATF Indoor Championships.
2023
  • Led the Eagles to a National Runner-up finish at the NCAA III Outdoor Championships while leading them to a National Championship at the NCAA III Indoor Championships.
  • Sam Blaskowski won the 100-meter National Title at the Outdoor Championships along with the 4x100 relay team bringing home gold.
  • At the Indoor Championships, Ethan Gregg (3,000-meter) and Sam Blaskowski (60-meter) won individual titles.
  • For the 13th time under Buchholtz and his staff, UWL swept the WIAC Indoor and Outdoor Conference Championships.
2022
  • UWL finished tied for 17th at the NCAA III Indoor Championships while they finished fourth at the NCAA III Outdoor Championships.
  • Sam Blaskowksi won an Outdoor National Title in the 100-meter dash, becoming the first sprinter in school history to win the championship.
  • Adam Loenser qualified and competed at the USA Track & Field U20 Outdoor Championship where he finished sixth overall.
  • Eagles finished second at both the WIAC Indoor and Outdoor Conference Championships.
Highlights 2009-2021
  • Led the Eagles to four NCAA III Indoor Championships (2009, 2013, 2014, 2017).
  • Coached the Eagles to four NCAA III Outdoor Championships (2013. 2014, 2016, 2017).
  • Swept the WIAC Indoor and Outdoor Championships every year from 2009-2019. The 2020 indoor and outdoor and 2021 Indoor WIAC championships were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic threat.
  • USTFCCCA Indoor Region Coach of the Year (2012, 2013, 2014, 2019)
  • USTFCCCA Outdoor Region Coach of the Year (2012, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2019)
Other Coaching Experiences
  • Served as the men’s track & field head coach at UW-Stout from 2002-08 and women’s track & field head coach at UW-Stout from 2007-08.
  • Buchholtz also served as the Blue Devils men’s cross country head coach from 2002-07.
  • Prior to taking over at UW-Stout, Buchholtz was UWL’s women’s track & field assistant coach (2000-02).
