50 Years of Women's Athletics - Alumni Profile Jill Bratberg

Jill (Jacobson) Bratberg (’89)

Sport: Tennis (1985-89)

Why did you choose UWL?
I chose UW-L because it was close to home, it was the perfect size, and it had a tennis team.

Who influenced you the most during your time at UWL?
The person that influenced me the most at UWL was my tennis coach, Sue Fischer.

How did your undergraduate experience at UWL impact what you are doing in your career now?
My undergraduate experience at UWL was the best!  All my professors were so personable and so easy to get to know.  They were very helpful and non-intimating.  Being on the tennis team were some of the best times and memories of my life!  Since the women also practiced with the men when we went to Nationals, we became close friends with their team and are still close 30 years later!

What is your most fond memory while being at UWL as a student?
My fondest memory while being a student at UWL is getting to know the athletic dept staff so well since I had a Sports Mgt. major and many classes in Mitchell Hall.  They were all supportive and gave me smiles and took the time to get to know me.

What are you most proud of about your undergrad years now that you have graduated?
Looking back, I’m most proud of my success on the tennis court and the close friendships that I made on the team while getting a degree in sports management.

What advice would you give current UWL student-athletes?
The advice I would give to current student-athletes is these will be some of the best memories of your life.  Create those friendships because they could last a lifetime.

Any fun facts or stories you would like to add?
Funny memory…I was left behind at a gas station on the way back from competition in Hilton Head, South Carolina.  They forgot to do a head count one time and that was the time I was left behind for 6 hours.  It’s always good for a laugh when we get together for reunions.
