UWL Finishes Third at Pete Willson Wheaton Invite; Seven Place in Tournament; Three Third-Place Finishes

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team finished third at the Wheaton College (Ill.) Pete Willson Invitational Saturday afternoon. The Eagles recorded 112.5 team points. UW-Eau Claire won the team title with 150.5 points with UW-Whitewater second with 142.5. A total of 30 teams scored points. 

UWL is second in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Tournament rankings and third in the dual team rankings. 

Seven wrestlers placed on Saturday for UWL, including three third-place finishers. The Eagles' Wyatt Magolski placed third at 133-pounds, going 5-1 in the two-day tournament. After finishing 3-0 on Friday, he opened Saturday's acation with a lost by decision (6-5) to Ethan Spacht of North Central College (Ill.) in the semifinals. Magolski came back with a pair of victories to place third overall. He won by decision (9-5) over Art Martinez of Case Western Reserve University (Ohio) in the consolation semifinals and took third with a decision (4-3) over Coby Haney of Millikin University (Ill.). 

Talan Schutte finished third at 141-pounds on Saturday, also going 5-1 overall. He went 3-0 on Friday. Schutte lost by decision (7-2) to Mark Samuel of Roanoke University (Va.) in Saturday's semifinals. He won by decision (9-3) over Desmond Diggs of Mount St. Joseph University (Ohio) in the consolation semifinals and captured third-place with a decision (11-4) over Evan Onstad of UW-Whitewater. 

At 174-pounds, UWL's Eddie Simes placed third in the tournament with a 6-1 record. After going 3-1 in Friday's action, Simes went 3-0 on Saturday. He won by major decision (11-3) over Cale Callahan of Otterbein University (Ohio) in the consolation fifth round and by decision (2-1) over Ryan Riser of UW-Whitewater in the consolation semifinals. Simes, ranked ninth in the NWCA, took third with a decision victory (3-0) over Aidan Faria of Rhode Island College. 

Quintin Wolbert, ranked 14th in the NWCA at 125-pounds, placed fourth Saturday. He went 3-0 on Friday and finished 4-2 overall. Wolbert lost by decision (12-5) to Jalen Dunson of UW-Whitewater in Saturday's semifinals before a win by decision (10-5) over Jase Van Pelt of Cornell College (Iowa) in the consolation semifinals. Wolbert lost by decision (7-1) to Isaic Paulino of Roanoke (Va.) in third-place match to finish fourth.

The Eagles also had one fifth-place finisher Saturday with Josh Cherba going 5-2 at 149-pounds. He won by technical fall (27-10, 4:44) over Chase Mirelez of Millikin University (Ill.) in the consolation fifth round before losing by fall (:50) to Dalton Monger of Messiah (Pa.) in the consolation semifinals. Cherba took fifth with a technical fall (20-5, 4:26) over Kyle Bizjak of John Carroll University (Ohio). 

Sedeeq AlObaidai and Gabe Carter both placed seventh with 5-2 records. AlObaidai lost by decision (4-2) to Gavin Kohel of UW-Whitewater in Saturday's consolation fifth round before a forfeit win over Cael McLaren of Cornell College (Iowa) in the seventh-place finish.

Carter lost by fall (4:15) to Caleb Burkart of Wilkes University (Pa.) in the consolation fifth round and placed seventh with a major decision (14-3) over Jackson Brinker of Cornell (Iowa) for seventh-place.  

UWL's Kasey Gish went 1-2 at 197-pounds on Saturday. 

UWL returns to action Friday, February 7 hosting UW-Stevens Point at 6:30 p.m. in its home finale.
