Rochester, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team competed at the Rochester Community & Technical College (Minn.) Yellowjacket Open Saturday. No team scores were recorded.
In the open division,
Tate Flege captured the 165-pound title on Saturday with a 4-0 record. He opened with a win by decision (4-3) over Jude Link of St. Cloud State University (Minn.) followed by a decision (5-3) over Payton Anderson of Augustana College (S.D.) in the second round. Flege won by decision (7-0) over Augustana's (S.D.) Payton Handevidt and completed the tournament with a technical fall over teammate
Brett Skaug.
UWL's
Leo Draveling won the 174-pound division with a 3-0 record. He won by decision (10-7) over James Burks of St. Cloud State (Minn.) in the opening round. Draveling followed with a pair of injury defaults over Josh Wagener of Augustana (S.D.) and unattached Michael Kelly.
Skaug was third at 165-pounds with a 3-1 record.
UWL's
Cole Hansen placed second at 157-pounds while going 3-1.
Matt Haldiman was 1-3 at 133-pounds and
Cael Weinzweig 0-3. The Eagles'
Cooper Larson was 0-4 at 157-pounds. Other results included
Tyler Dormanen going 1-1 at 184-pounds,
Ben Kawczynski finishing 1-2 at 197-pounds and
Gabe Carter going 0-2 at 197.
In the freshman/sophomore division,
Ino Garcia finished second at 125-pounds. He received a first round bye and won by major decision (11-0) over Joey Sikorsky of Harper Community College (Ill.) in the second round. Garcia won by decision (10-4) over Brandon Board of Augustana (S.D.) in the quarterfinals and by sudden victory (4-1) over Austin Grzywinski of St. Cloud State (Minn.) in the semifinals. He lost by fall (4:22) to Jaydale Whitlock of Iowa Central Community College in the title match.
Three other wrestlers placed in the freshman/sophomore division.
Grant Madl was fourth at 125-pounds with 3-2 record while
Teague Holzer (133) and
Sedeeq AlObaidai (174) each placed fifth.
Thomas Giere was 2-1 at 125-pounds.
Kaiden Schrandt and
Marcus McIntyre both finished 3-2 at 141-pounds while
Jack Krier went 2-2. The Eagles'
Kash Macumber was 3-2 and
Jack Gillis 2-2 at 174-pounds.
