Kearney Wins Midwest Open Title; Steinert Advances to ITA Quarterfinals

Katie Kearney won the singles title at the Midwest Open.
Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's tennis team completed action at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional and Midwest Open Sunday at UW-Whitewater. No team scores were recorded. 

In the ITA Midwest Regional, UWL's Kimberly Steinert advanced to the quarterfinals, finishing with a 3-1 record. She opened the tournament with win (6-2, 6-1) over Hayley Trebil of Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) after receiving a first round bye. Steinert defeated Utsah Kaira of Grinnell College (Iowa) in the round of 32 (3-6, 6-3, 10-0) before beating Ashley Tarrolly of College of St. Benedict (Minn.) in the round of 16 (6-0, 6-2).  Steinert dropped her quarterfinal (6-4, 6-1) to Irene Augusti of Grinnell (Iowa).

The Eagles' Tasha Bailey also advanced to the round of 32 at the ITA Midwest Regional, finishing with a 2-1 record. After a first round bye, Bailey defeated Maya Callaway of UW-Superior (6-0, 6-0) in her first match. She defeated (7-5, 6-3) Anna Wanek of Simpson College (Iowa) before losing to Autumn Bruno of UW-Whitewater in the round of 32 (6-2, 6-1). 

Kaitlyn Kalinka went 1-1 in the ITA Midwest Regional while Morgan Graf, Susi Hu and Hannah Riegle each went 0-1.  Hu went 1-1 in the consolation round. 

In doubles play, Steinert/Kellie Hierl, Bailey/Kalinka and Riegle/Graf each went 0-1 in the ITA Midwest Regional. Riegle and Graf came back to go 3-0 in consolation doubles. 

UWL's Katie Kearney captured the C Division of the Midwest Open this weekend with a 4-0 record. She defeated Jania Carter-Johnson of Coe College (Iowa) in the second round (6-3, 6-0) and Josie Carlson of Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) in the semifinals (7-6, 6-1). Kearney defeated Kalae Martin of Grinnell (Iowa) in the title match (6-1, 6-1). 

In other singles action at the Midwest Open, Sophia Knigge went 1-1 while Madeline Kleinke and Avery Nicholson each finished 0-1. 

Hierl/Kalinka finished second in the consolation doubles tournament of the Midwest Open. The duo went 4-1 overall, defeating Megan Grimm/Jalen Denhartog of Luther College (Iowa) in the first round (8-1) before defeating Ambriel Jacobs/Georgia Nissen of Wartburg College (Iowa) in the next round (8-1). Hierl/Kalinka defeated Makenzie Robinson/Mary Shogren of UW-Eau Claire in the quarterfinals (8-0) and teammates Riegle/Graf in the semifinals (8-4).  Hierl/Kalinka lost to Olivia Kraft/Kellie Ha of UW-Whitewater in the final (8-0). 

Hu/Knigge and Kearney/Kleinke each went 0-1 in the Midwest Open doubles while Lauren Witt/Nicholson finished 1-1.  Kearney/Kleinke then finished 2-1 in consolation doubles with Witt/Nicholson going 0-1. 

UWL returns to action Saturday, October 9 at UW-Stevens Point at noon.
