St. Thomas Advances to Second Round With Win Over Knox

La Crosse, Wis. –
The University of St. Thomas (Minn.) earned a 1-0 win over Knox College (Ill.) in the first round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Tournament played at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.  The win moves St. Thomas (Minn.) to 19-2 on the season while Knox (Ill.) ends its season at 13-5-3.
 
St. Thomas (Minn.), ranked 16th in the United Soccer Coaches Top-25 Poll, advances to the second round to face UW-La Crosse Sunday, November 11 at 1 p.m.  UW-La Crosse advanced with a 2-0 win over Wartburg College (Iowa).

St. Thomas (Minn.) and Knox (Ill.) were both making its third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
 
The Tommies of St. Thomas (Minn.) did not take long to get on the scoreboard as Kaley Roberts took a crossing pass from Mallory DeBoom and headed the ball past Prairie Fire goalkeeper Sierra Daniger at 4:10.  Both teams would have many opportunities in the first half, but were unsuccessful. St. Thomas (Minn.) outshot Knox (Ill.), 10-4 in the opening period.
 
The second half again saw both teams have scoring chances, but neither was able to find the back of the net.  Knox's (Ill.) best chance came in the 82nd minute when Rosie Medina took a corner kick pass from Lydia Mitchell and had her shot blocked by a Tommies defender.  
 
St. Thomas (Minn.) finished the match with a 19-9 advantage in shots, including 11-4 in shots on goal . Elizabeth Luotto led the Tommies with seven shots, including three on goal while Roberts had all three of her shots on goal.  Medina led the Fire Prairie with two shots.
 
Olivia Elvidge recorded the shutout for St. Thomas (Minn.) as she stopped all four shots she faced. Daniger finished with 10 saves for Knox (Ill.).
