Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's tennis team swept a pair of matches Saturday afternoon at UW-Stevens Point. The Eagles earned a 7-2 non-conference victory over Carroll University (Wis.) before opening Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play with a 6-3 win over UW-Stevens Point. UW-L improves to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
Versus Carroll, UW-L swept all three doubles matches as Olivia Hartwick/Abby Tresedder defeated Abigail Pellett/Megan Rosenberg at No. 1 (8-3); Bryanne Blanton/Kimmy Mrozek beat Julia Patzin/Alison Lambrecht at No. 2 (8-3) and Jennifer Graham/Kendra Woyahn defeated Samantha Hoyord/Sarah Wick at No. 3 (8-4).
The Eagles took four of six singles matches versus the Pioneers. Tresedder defeated Rosenberg at No. 2 (6-1, 6-1) and Blanton beat Patzin at No. 3 (6-0, 6-0). Mrozek earned the win over Alison Lambrecht at No. 4 singles (6-0, 6-0) and Samantha Fleming defated Hoyord at No. 5 (3-6, 7-6, 10-4).
Pellett defeated Hartwick at No. 1 singles (6-2, 6-7, 13-11) while Julie Schweiss defeated Rachael Wabers at No. 6 (6-3, 6-3).
Against UW-Stevens Point, UW-L won two of three doubles matches. Blanton/Mrozek defeated Katelyn Asfeld/Hayley Schlueter at No. 2 (8-3) and Fleming/Wabers defeated Ali Bichler/Kayla Fuller at No. 3 (8-1). The Pointers' Rachel Brown/Taylor Weuve defeated Hartwick/Tresedder at No. 1 doubles (9-7).
In singles play, UW-L won four of the six matches. Mrozek defeated Weuve at No. 3 (6-2, 6-2); Blanton beat Schlueter at No. 4 (6-1, 6-4); Woyahn beat Bichler at No. 5 (6-1, 6-1) and Graham defeated Molly Hendries at No. 6 (6-1, 6-0).
Brown defeated Tresedder at No. 1 singles (6-2, 6-2) while Asfeld earned the victory over Hartwick at No. 2 (7-6, 7-6).
UW-L returns to action Saturday, September 14 with its home opener versus UW-Whitewater. The match is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. at Veterans Courts.
