Matthai placed third at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships, completing the 8,000-meter course in 24:04.4. He earned his first career All-America honor as helped lead UWL to the team title. His brother, Aidan Matthai, finished fifth overall (24:11.8) to also pick up All-America accolades. It marked the second time in school history UWL had two runners place in the top-five at the national championships. Brett Altergott won the national title and Brad Wilson was fourth in 1997.
