Matthai used a smooth race distribution to run a personal-best by 31 seconds to finish fifth at the University of Notre Dame Joe Piane Invitational on October 4. He completed the 8,000-meter course in 24:00.6 in helping lead UWL to the team title, featuring several NCAA Division I schools. A total of 150 runners completed the race.
