UW-La Crosse Falls at Tenth-Ranked UW-Stevens Point

Box Score Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team fell 62-57 at 10th-ranked UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon on Bennett Court in Quandt Fieldhouse. The Eagles, receiving votes on this week's D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll, drop to 12-4 overall and 5-2 in the WIAC while the Pointers improve to 14-2 overall and 7-0 in the conference. UW-Stevens Point is ranked 10th on the D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll.

It is UW-Stevens Point's 23rd win in the last 24 meetings with UW-L.

The Pointers raced out to a 10-0 lead as the Eagles missed their first four shots from the field and had one turnover. UW-L cut the lead to 10-3 on Lucas Collom's three-pointer with 14:59 remaining in the half. The Pointers later took a 14-3 lead before the Eagles cut it to 16-10 with 11:20 left after a pair of Cale Zuiker free throws.

UW-Stevens Point used a 7-0 run to lead 23-10, but UW-L responded with a 10-0 run itself. The Pointers led 25-22 at halftime.

The Pointers never trailed in the second half, using a 10-4 run to take 43-34 lead with 12:15 remaining after the Eagles had cut the lead to three. UW-Stevens Point led 52-41 with 8:22 left when UW-L scored six consecutive points to make it 52-47 with 4:56 remaining.

After UW-Stevens Point led 58-51 with 3:09 left, UW-L went on a 6-0 run to make it 58-57 with 1:02 remaining. The Pointers' Trevor Hass missed a free throw with :42 left, but the Eagles missed a layup with :28 left and Hass was fouled. He made both free throws with :24 remaining for a 60-57 lead and after UW-L missed a potential game-tying three-point field goal, Austin Ryf finished the scoring with a pair of free throws with :09 left.

Michael Barrett led UW-L with 12 points and three steals while Zuiker and Trent Schmidt each finished with 10 points. Barrett also had five rebounds. Jeff Heiden and Lucas Morrissey added eight points each with Morrissey adding a team-high eight rebounds.

UW-L shot 34.6% from the field, including 18.2% (four-of-22) from three-point range. The Eagles shot 89.5% (17-of-19) at the free throw line.

Joe Ritchay led UW-Stevens Point with 14 points while Hass finished with 12 and Ryf 11. Hass also had eight rebounds and three assists while Ryf finished with five rebounds and five assists.

UW-Stevens Point shot 50.0% from the field, including 35.0% (seven-of-20) from three-point range. The Pointers shot 69.2% (nine-of-13) at the line.

UW-L returns to action Wednesday, January 16 at UW-Stout at 7 p.m.
