New Orleans, La. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse placed second in the final 2010 United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Program of the Year standings for men. The award is named after Al Carius, a member of the USTFCCCA Hall of Fame and North Central College (Ill.) head coach.
The Al Carius NCAA Division III Program of the Year Award honors the institution that achieved the most success while competing at national meets in the sports of cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field.
In order to be eligible for the award, teams must qualify for each of the three NCAA Division III championship meets. Scoring is based on each team's finish, with one point going to first place and two to second. The lowest combined score for all three championships determine the award winner.
UW-L placed second overall with 16 points. The Eagles were 10th at the 2009 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships, third at the 2010 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships and third at the 2010 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
North Central won this year's men's award with three points. The Cardinals swept the cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field championships in 2009-10. Amherst College (Mass.) placed third with 35.5 points while Williams College (Mass.) was fourth with 43 and the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) fifth with 89.5.
A total of 18 programs accumulated points in the rankings.
