UW-L Places Seventh in Directors' Cup Standings

Ties Best Finish in School History

UW-L placed seventh in the Division III Directors' Cup Standings.
Cleveland, Ohio - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse finished seventh in the 2009-10 Division III Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Division III standings released Wednesday. The Eagles recorded 678.75 points while Williams College (Mass.) captured its 12th consecutive cup with 1,292.25 points. Williams has won 14 Directors' Cup in the 15 years it has been awarded.

UW-L's seventh-place showing in 2009-10 ties its best finish in school history. The Eagles were also seventh in 2003-04, 2004-05 and 2006-07. UW-L, which now has nine top-10 finishes in the 15 years of the Directors' Cup program, placed 11th last season.

UW-L is one of six institutions in NCAA III history to finish in the top-20 all 15 years of the Sports Directors' Cup joining Williams College (Mass.), The College of New Jersey, Amherst College (Mass.), Middlebury College (Vt.) and Cortland State (N.Y.).

Amherst College (Mass.) finished second this season with 905.75 points. Washington University (Mo.) was third (858.50), Middlebury College (Vt.) fourth (751.0) and Illinois Wesleyan University fifth (704.25). Tufts University, Mass. placed sixth (699.0) followed by UW-La Crosse (678.75), The College of New Jersey (677.75), Salisbury University, Md. (673.25) and the University of St. Thomas, Minn. (670.25) to round-out the top-10.

Other Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference institutions in the top-25 included UW-Stevens Point placing 12th (654.0 points), UW-Whitewater 14th (615.75), UW-Eau Claire 16th (602.50) and UW-Oshkosh 23rd (541.50). UW-Platteville finished 88th (210.0) while UW-Stout was 103rd (178.75) and UW-River Falls tied for 107th (173.0).

UW-L was awarded 90 points for the wrestling team finishing second at the 2010 NCAA Division III Championships; 85 points for men's track & field placing third at the indoor championships and 85 points for finishing third at the outdoor championships. The Eagles' women's track & field squad earned 72.75 points for finishing sixth at the indoor national meet and 72 points for their seventh-place finish at the outdoor championships. The softball team picked up 50 points for appearing in the 2010 national tournament.

UW-L earned 72 points for the women's swimming & diving team finishing seventh at the 2010 NCAA Division III Championships and 52 points for the men's swimming & diving team earning 22nd-place. The Eagles scored 60 points for the men's cross country squad finishing 10th at the 2009 NCAA III Championships and 40 points for the women's cross country team placing 17th.

The Eagles captured the 2010 National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) title, but points are only awarded for NCAA sponsored championships.

The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 18 sports -- nine women's and nine men's.
