Gabi Hooper of
New Brighton, Minn. (Totino-Grace) has been selected to the 2010 CoSIDA/
ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® College Division Women's At-Large Second Team. It is the first CoSIDA Academic All-America® honor for Hooper.
The CoSIDA/
ESPN The Magazine Academic America® At-Large Team is voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The at-large team includes fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
The college division includes National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II and III, National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) and two-year institutions.
Hooper is a community health education major while maintaining a 3.86 grade point average. She is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll and has been named to UW-L's Dean's List. Hooper was named the WIAC Co-Scholar-Athlete for gymnastics in 2010.
A two-time National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) champion on the vault, Hooper won the title in 2007 and 2008. She also placed second in 2009. Hooper captured the national championship on the floor exercise in 2010. She became the fifth gymnast in school history to win a school record three individual titles, joining
Lisa Kartman,
Kim MacKrille,
Kari Motz and
Nina Schubert. Hooper earned UW-L's first floor exercise championship since
Becky McDonnell won back-to-back titles in 1998 and 1999.
Earning seven career NCGA All-America honors, Hooper was second on the balance beam in 2008, second on the floor exercise in 2007 and tied for fourth on the floor exercise in 2009.
She holds the school record on the vault with a score of 9.900 against Illinois State University in 2009.
Hooper captured a pair of WIAC titles in 2010, winning the vault and tying for first on the floor exercise. She wrapped up her career with six first-place finishes at the conference championships, winning three times in the vault (2007, 2009, 2010) and twice on the floor exercise (2007, 2010). Hooper also won the league crown on the balance beam (2008).
She tied for 29th on the vault in a 2010 NCAA Division I Women's Gymnastics Regional Championship in the University of Utah's Huntsman Center.
