Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a doubleheader split at UW-Stevens Point Sunday afternoon at University Field. The Eagles fell 10-9 in the opener, but came back to record a 15-5 victory in eight innings in the nightcap. UW-L is now 16-20 overall and 8-12 in the WIAC while UW-Stevens Point is 24-11 overall and 13-7 in the conference.
In the opener, the Pointers scored six times in the bottom of the third to take a 7-1 lead. The Eagles cut the lead to 8-5 after six innings and made it 8-7 in the seventh after
Brett Jacobson's two-run home run. UW-Stevens Point scored two runs in the seventh to regain a three-run lead at 10-7.
UW-L finished the scoring with solo home runs from
Matt Trocke and
Jay Fanta in the ninth.
Garrett Scray (2-2) suffered the loss for UW-L. He pitched 6.1 innings, allowing 12 hits, 10 runs (six earned) and two walks while striking out one.
Corey Geary was 4-for-5 for the Eagles with a run scored and two RBI. Jacobson, Fanta, Trocke,
Adam Cordova and
Matt Johnson each had two hits. Jacobson finished with two RBI while Johnson had two runs and two RBI.
Scott Williams (7-1) earned the win for UW-Stevens Point, going 6.0 innings, allowing 13 hits, five runs and two walks with five strikeouts. Ryan Povlick picked up his first save, pitching 1.0 inning, allowing one hit and one run. Brad Archambeau and Steve Considine each went 3-for-4 with two runs. Archambeau had two RBI.
In the nightcap, UW-Stevens Point took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Jeremy S. Richter's two-run home run, but UW-L's
Travis Martin gave the Eagles a 3-2 lead with a three-run home run in the top of the second. The Pointers tied the game with a run in the bottom of the inning.
UW-L scored three runs in the fourth on a two-run double from Martin and Johnson RBI single. The Eagles tallied six times in the sixth. Trocke had a two-run single and
Lance Poppy a three-run home run. Johnson added a solo home run and Fanta an RBI single in the seventh.
Poppy was 3-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI while Martin, Johnson, Trocke and Fanta each had two hits. Martin scored three runs and had five RBI while Johnson finished with three RBI. Trocke had two RBI while Fanta scored twice.
Tim Verthein (2-5) earned the win. He went 3.2 innings in relief, allowing four hits, one run and one walk while striking out two.
Eric Van Beck (2-2) took the loss, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing six hits, six runs and a walk. Richter was 4-for-5 for the Pointers with two runs and three RBI.
UW-L returns to action Friday, May 7 hosting UW-Oshkosh at 1 p.m.
