Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team split a WIAC doubleheader at UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon at University Field. The Eagles won the opener, 4-2, before the Pointers came back to take the nightcap, 9-1. UW-L is now 15-19 overall and 7-11 in the WIAC while UW-Stevens Point is 23-10 overall and 12-6 in the conference.
In the opener, UW-L trailed 2-1 after seven innings. The Eagles tied the game in the top of the eighth as
Corey Geary singled to start the inning and was sacrificed to second by
Adam Cordova.
Matt Johnson followed with an RBI single to score Geary.
The Eagles scored twice in the top of the ninth.
Jay Fanta opened with a single with
Lance Poppy sacrificing him to second. After Fanta stole third, pinch-hitter
Jon-Paul Cloutier hit an RBI triple to give UW-L a 3-2 lead.
Brett Jacobson followed with an RBI double to knock in Cloutier.
Mitch Running earned the win for UW-L, pitching 8.0 innings, allowing seven hits, two runs (one earned) and four walks while striking out seven.
Steve Henes recorded the save, retiring Brad Archambeau on a fly out with the bases loaded.
Jacobson went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI.
Tyler Lorenz suffered the loss, going 8.0 innings. He allowed seven hits, three runs and two walks with seven strikeouts. Eric Fritz was 4-for-5 with an RBI for the Pointers.
In the nightcap, UW-Stevens Point led 8-1 after three innings. Jordan Rennicke had a two-run home run in the bottom of the first while Fritz had a two-run single in the second. Fritz hit a two-run home run in the third.
UW-L scored its run in the second on
Travis Martin's RBI double to score Jacobson.
Zach Lauersdorf suffered the loss, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing nine hits, nine runs (five earned) and five walks with four strikeouts. Six different players had a hit for UW-L.
Joe Delorit earned the victory for UW-Stevens Point, going 8.0 innings, allowing six hits, one run and two walks with 11 strikeouts. Fritz was 2-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and four RBI while Rennicke was 2-for-3 with a run and four RBI.
The teams return to action Sunday, May 2 with another twinbill starting at noon.
