UW-L Falls Short at UW-Superior

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse dropped its third straight game with an 98-89 loss at UW-Superior Saturday night in Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium. The Eagles fall to 14-8 overall and 6-7 in the WIAC while the Yellowjackets improve to 13-8 overall and 6-6 in the conference.

Tony Mane and Trevor Stratton combined for 60 points for UW-L with Mane finishing with a game-high 34 points and Stratton finishing with 26.

UW-Superior raced out to a 17-6 lead with 16:07 remaining in the first half, but UW-L came back to take a 23-22 lead with 10:08 left after an Austin Scott jumper. The Eagles led 35-30 with 5:37 left in the first half before the Yellowjackets ended the half on a 10-5 run to lead 49-46.

The Yellowjackets opened the second half on a 7-2 run to lead 56-48. UW-L forced a 62-62 tie with 13:40 remaining after a 14-6 run and the game was later tied 70-70 with 10:11 left.

UW-Superior scored 14 of the next 18 points to take an 84-74 advantage with 6:12 remaining and UW-L could get no closer than eight the rest of the game.

Mane finished 13-of-24 from the field, including six-of-10 from three-point range, and two-of-three at the free throw line. He also had five rebounds and four assists. Stratton was eight-of-18 from the field, including four-of-10 from three-point range, and hit all six of his free throw attempts. He added four rebounds and four assists.

Andrew Haass finished with 10 points for the Eagles.

UW-L shot 54.0% from the field, including 45.8% (11-of-24) from three-point range, and 90.9% (10-of-11) at the line.

All five starters scored in double figures for UW-Superior led by Jake Smith's 26 points. Marcus Helland finished with 21 points while Dwight Hill had 20, Dan Culy 16 and Greg Roeder 10. Helland had a game-high eight rebounds.

UW-Superior shot 57.9% from the field, including 50.0% (six-of-12) from three-point range, and 81.3% (26-of-32) at the free throw line.

UW-L returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 10 hosting UW-Oshkosh at 7:05 p.m.
