Eagles Fall to Delaware Valley at NWCA Duals

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling squad fell 22-15 to Delaware Valley College (Pa.) Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA)/Cliff Keen National Duals in the University of Northern Iowa UNI-Dome. The Eagles are now 8-2 on the season and will wrestle in the consolation round at 5 p.m. Saturday. Delaware Valley advances to the semifinals Sunday, Jan. 10.

UW-L is currently ranked first and Delaware Valley 12th in NCAA Division III. The Eagles advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals after a 32-6 win over the University of Dubuque (Iowa) in Saturday's opening round.

The Aggies took a 4-0 lead at 125-pounds as Zach Haynes earned a major decision victory (11-2) over the Eagles' Albie McKinney. Top-ranked Bebeto Yewah came back for UW-L to cut the lead to 4-3 after winning by decision (7-4) over Eric McCann at 133-pounds.

Delaware Valley's Zac Andrews won by fall (1:52) over UW-L's Alex Dahl at 141-pounds to give the Aggies a 10-3 team lead. Matt Mauseth, ranked fourth in NCAA III, cut the lead to 10-6 for the Eagles with a win by decision (2-1) over Emanual Ajagbe at 149-pounds.

Jesse Harrington, the top-ranked wrestler at 157-pounds, gave the Aggies a 13-6 lead with a win by decision (8-3) over Ryan Farwell. UW-L took the next two matches to take a 15-13 team lead. Cory Ferguson won by fall (1:00) over Matt Lindsay at 165-pounds and Mike Schmitz won by decision (6-1) over Dan Daddino at 174. Ferguson is ranked ninth and Schmitz second in the country.

Delaware Valley won the final three matches by decision to earn the team victory. Tenth-ranked Martin Porter defeated Mitch Artist at 184-pounds (6-4); Jeff Siciliano beat John Poppie at 197-pounds (12-6) and Kyle Bilquist defeated Dan Laurent (7-4). Bilquist is ranked fourth and Laurent first in NCAA Division III.
