Wrestlers Place Fifth at NWCA Duals

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team placed fifth at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA)/Cliff Keen National Duals with a 36-6 victory over Concordia College Moorhead (Minn.) Sunday afternoon in the University of Northern Iowa UNI-Dome. The Eagles are now 11-2 on the season and finished 4-1 at the national duals.

UW-L, ranked first in NCAA Division III, earned a 35-3 victory over Cornell College (Iowa) earlier Sunday. The Eagles went 2-1 in Saturday's action, defeating the University of Dubuque, Iowa (32-6), falling to Delaware Valley College, Pa. (22-15) and beating UW-Whitewater (23-16).

Concordia Moorhead entered Sunday's dual ranked ninth in NCAA III.

The Eagles took a 8-0 lead after winning the first two matches. Albie McKinney earned a win by decision (7-2) over Ben Presler at 125-pounds and Bebeto Yewah won by technical fall (23-8) over Hieu Pham at 133-pounds. Yewah is currently ranked first in the country.

Concordia Moorhead cut the lead to 8-3 as fourth-ranked Ben Anderson won by decision (5-1) over UW-L's Alex Dahl at 141-pounds, but the Eagles took the next five matches. Fourth-ranked Matt Mauseth won by decision (4-2) over eighth-ranked Justin Berns at 149-pounds; Ryan Farwell won by major decision (8-0) over Joe Meinert at 157 and ninth-ranked Cory Ferguson won by default at 165-pounds.

Second-ranked Mike Schmitz then earned a win by fall over Concordia Moorhead's Ross Dankers at 174-pounds and Mitch Artist won by technical fall (17-0) over Matt Jeska at 184.

The Cobbers' Nathan Schmitz won by decision (2-0) over the Eagles' John Poppie at 197-pounds and UW-L's Dan Laurent finished the meet with a win by major decision (9-1) over Nick Nadeau at 285-pounds. Laurent is ranked first in the nation.

Mauseth went 5-0 in this year's national duals while Yehaw finished 4-0. McKinney, Ferguson and Laurent each went 4-1 while Schmitz and Artist finished 3-1. Farwell was 3-2 overall while Dahl and Poppie both went 2-3.

The Eagles' Adam Sheley and Grant Miller both won their only match of the weekend while Brenden Faust went 0-1.

UW-L returns to action Friday, Jan. 16 with a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual at UW-Stevens Point at 7 p.m
