E. William Vickroy came to UW-La Crosse in 1948 to begin a distinguished career as a teacher, coach and administrator. He was head baseball coach from 1948-68; head football coach from 1952-68; and head swimming coach from 1948-64. His teams won many conference and district championships, produced numerous All-Americans and earned their way to two bowl games in football. Vickroy became athletic director in 1969. During his tenure, the men's athletic teams have won two national all-sports championships in gymnastics. The women's teams have won three national team championships, two in track and one in basketball.
