William Spaltholz graduated from La Crosse State Teachers College in 1951 and coached football for 32 years at South Milwaukee High School, two as an assistant coach and 30 as head coach. He retired at the close of the 1982 campaign. During that time period as the head mentor, Spaltholz guided South Milwaukee teams to a share of severn Suburban Conference titles with his last outright championship coming in 1980.
In addition, Spaltholz coached the Rockets in the first state public high school play-offs in 1976. His coaching career, which saw him post a 153-102-6 record in football, was topped off in the summer of 1982 as he coached the South team in the State Shrine All-Star Game. He also coached track and basketball at the school. While attending La Crosse State Teachers College, Spaltholz competed in football, basketball, and track. He captained the track team in his senior year.
