Following his graduation from La Crosse State Teachers College, Zimmermann coached football, basketball, baseball and track at Delavan High School and later when it became Delavan-Darien High School, he directed football, track and swimming.
During his tenure as head coach, his football teams won 155 games and lost 73 en route to six conference championship titles. In addition, his track teams won 101 dual meets while losing only 29 times on their way to six conference championships. Zimmermann's own athletic career was highlighted by his being named to the All-WSUC team in 1942 and 1946, despite an interruption to serve in the Army from 1943-1945.
In college, he was president of the Men's Intramural Athletic Association, president of the Beta Sigma Chi fraternity and was listed in Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities. He has accumulated numerous special honors including induction to the Wisconsin Football Coaches Hall of Fame and was named Wisconsin Athletic Director of the Year in 1982. He is also a member of the UW-La Crosse Alumni Association and Beta Sigma Chi. He is a member of the L-Club.
