Athlete: 1949-1953
W. Glynn Humphrey applied his achievements in athletics toward a successful career in elementary education and other contributions to the Racine area. Humphrey participated in basketball, track and football while attending La Crosse. The Racine native excelled on the basketball court where he earned three letters, played on the conference championship team in 1951 and was named All-Conference in '52 and '53. His senior year, the La Crosse Tribune called him "one of the finest guards in La Crosse history." Humphrey graduated with an elementary education major in 1952. Humphrey earned a master's in 1953. He entered the U.S. Army after finishing school and served in Korea and Japan. He returned to Racine to teach fifth grade in 1955. Humphrey earned a master's in school and administration from UW-Madison in 1960 and became an elementary school principal in 1962, a position he held until retiring in 1987. Humphrey didn't keep his interest in sports only at school. He's credited for organizing successful recreational activities for Racine's inner-city children after school and during weekends.
