Thomas J. Newberry
Athlete: 1981-86
Newberry conlcuded a stellar collegiate career as a four year member of the football and track and field teams. He was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the 1986 NFL draft, and during his 10 year career he earned two trips to the Pro Bowl, was named to the AP All Pro First Team and to the All-Madden Team for three consecutive seasons. He signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1995 and played in Super Bowl XXX before retiring from the NFL.
Newberry, at UW-L, was a four year stater and letter winner in football, captaining in 1985 NAIA Division II National Championship team. He also earned All-WSUC and NAIA II All-American First Team honors in 1984 and '85.
In track & field, Newberry was a four time NCAA Division III National Champion, three in shot put and one in discus. He also captured three consecutive WSUC shot put titles in competition from 1983-85 along with championships in the discus and hammer in outdoor competition in 1984 and '85. He is the WSUC record holder in the indoor shot put and UW-L record holder in the indoor and outdoor shot put.
