Swimming is the major sport of Thomas Hargraves. He lettered in swimming for four years at Wisconsin State College, La Crosse, and was co-capatin of the swim team as a senior. He also participated in track and was on the 400 medley relay team which placed sixth in the NAIA meet in 1959. Since 1960, Hargraves has taught physical education and has been head swim coach at West High School in Madison, Wi.
During his 26 years as coach, he has produced 26 high school All-Americans and two National Individual Champions. His men's teams have won the state championship seven times and won 82 consecutive dual meets with no losses and just one tie from 1974-1985.
Hargraves' women's teams have taken the state title three times and were National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Associtaion champions in 1984. Hargraves has been named Men's Swim Coach of the Year three times and has served as president of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association. He is a member of the Monona Jaycees and was that group's Jaycee of the Year.
