Teresa Thomas
Athlete: 1972-1976
Teresa Thomas helped the university's womens and mens bowling teams roll to nation notoriety in the mid-70s. In a time when womens intercollegiat sports were just getting underway, Thomas helped the men's bowling team in 1973-74 take NAIA District 14 title, and a fourth-place finish at nationals. By competeing in those evnts, she became the first woman bowler to ever compete in NAIA tournament competition. She returned with the men's team at nationals the following season and helped them repeat as fourth-place finishers. Thomas bowled with the university's womens teams from 1973-76, helping them bowl to a conference championship each year, a regional championship in 1975, a fourth-place finish nationally in 1975, and a return trip to nationals in 1976. She received the Jack Connaughton Award--given to the bowler who most exemplifies sportsmanship, attitude, and bowling ability--in 1975.
