Athlete: 1960-1965
Phil Esten has kept UW-L men's cross country teams ahead of the pack for more than two decades. Since taking over the harrier helm in 1970, Esten and his runners have brought home 16 WSUC championships and seven national runner-up titles. His teams have placed in the top 10 at nationals since 1972. He also helped the men's track team gain national attention while assistant coach form 1970-1987.
Esten led La Crosse teams as a student here, too. The Beaver Dam native lettered in cross country from 1960-1963 and in track and field in 1961 and from 1963-65. He was team captain in both sports his junior and senior years. Esten taught and coached at Racine Horlick High School for five years before returning to UW-L. During that time, he led Horlick track team to the 1968 class A championship.
Esten holds a master's and Doctorate from the University of Northern Colorado.
