Mary Hansen helped bring the first- and only- national title in women's basketball to campus. As coach of the women cagers for two years, she guided the '79-'80 squad to the runner-up spot in the AIAW Division III before taking the '80-'81 squad to the top, finishing with a 25-6 record.
That year, she was named American Women's Sport Foundation Coach of the Year and nominated as one of the top 20 coaches fro Stayfree Coach of the Year. Hansen was hot on the La Crosse basketball court as a player, too. She helped the team take the Wisconsin's Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles three of her college of years; they were runners-up the fourth. She also participated in tennis and track, in which both '74-'75 teams won conference titles.
Hansen, who earned two degrees at UW-L--a bachelor's in 1979 and a master's in 1981, taught and coached in numerous Texas colleges after leaving La Crosse.
