    An all-around athlete at La Crosse State Teachers College, John Harr lettered in football and basketball and was captain of the track team. He served as a professor of history at Northwest Missouri State University since 1944. In 1979 he was honored by the Missouri Board of Regents as the school's first Distinguished University Professor. The Sparta native was a member of the university's athletic board for 35 years, including five as chairman.
