Joe Werner was a member of basketball team for four seasons. He was named to the WIAC All-Time Team, earning a pair of National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III All-America selections. Werner was a 2005-06 third team choice and 2006-07 second team honoree. He was also voted to the 2006-07 D3hoops.com All-America Fourth Team.
A three-time (2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07) WIAC First Team selection, Werner was voted the league's player of the year in 2006-07 and named one of 10 finalists for The Jostens Trophy for the NCAA Division III Player of the Year. He is one three players in school history to earn three first team all-conference honors and was the first player since John Mielke in 1980-81 to be named the WIAC Player of the Year. Werner was selected the WIAC Player of the Week seven times in his career.
UWL finished 20-8 in 2005-06, recording its most wins since 1982-83. The Eagles made their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament in 2006. Werner helped lead UWL to a 19-8 record in 2006-07 as the team advanced to the WIAC Tournament Championship game for the first time in school history. UWL's 39 wins during the two-year span of 2005-07 were the most since the team won 40 games between 1975-77.
Playing in 104 career games for the Eagles, including 94 starts, Werner ranks second in school history in career rebounds (829), blocks (70) and field goal percentage (.565) and sixth in scoring (1,398). He is also sixth in career field goals made (571), eighth in attempts (1,010), sixth in free throw attempts (373), 11th in free throw made (255) and 11th in steals (95).
He earned his bachelor's degree in international management in 2006 and his MBA in 2008. Werner is a marketing representative agent for Federated Insurance.
