Howard Stiehm lettered as a La Crosse football halfback in the 1937 and '38 seasons and earned letters in track from 1937-39 in the shot put and discuss events. He co-captained the 1939 track team and was the president of the senior class that year.
He coached several sports at schools in Reedsburg and Marinette before coming to D.C. Everest High School in Schofield in 1953. As head football coach at the school for the next 20 years, he compiled an incredible 165-38-4 record.
His teams had 10 undefeated seasons and ranked among the top 10 schools in the state several times. His 1971 squad won the state title. After he retired as athletic administrator at D.C. Everest in 1977, the school's football field was named Stiehm Stadium.
