Athlete: 1967-71
A four year letter winner in both football and wrestling, Greg Mattison found himself defending more than the country at the U.S. Naval Academy. He became defensive line coach for the Navy in 1987. Mattison built that gridiron ability while playing for the Indians.
In 1970 as a senior, he was top blocker and captain of the team and earned All-District and second team All-Conference honors. He was also captain of the wrestling team and most valuable wrestler and earned fifth place as a heavyweight on the NAIA All-American Wrestling Squad. That spring, Alpha Kappa Lambda named him National Athlete of the Year.
Mattison signed with the Washington Redskins in 1971. Later that year, he played for the Madison Mustangs and began coaching football at Riverdale high School in Muscoda, Wis.
He returned to La Crosse in 1974 to coach Logan High school's squad for two seasons, earning two city championships as well as a conference title and an undefeated season. In 1976, UW-L named him Alumni Coach of the Year. After earning a master's at the University of Illinois in 1977, he coached in the college ranks at Cornell, Northwestern and Western Michigan before joining Navy.
