Athlete: 1954-58
The name of Ed Winiarski has been synonymous with sports in Fort Atkinson, Wis., for more than 30 years. When the 1958 graduate left campus, he started a lifetime career of teaching and coaching at Fort Atkinson High School. Winiarski earned four letters in both basketball and baseball at La Crosse. In buckets, he was captain and gained All-Conference honors in 1957 and 1958 and was named to the Little All-American Team in 1958. A baseball starter as a freshman, he played pitcher, first base and outfielder positions and was captain of the team for two years. At Fort Atkinson, Winiarski has coached winning teams in track, baseball, football, cross country and basketball. He was named athletic director in 1968, a position he held for 10 years until being named the high school's assistant principal.
