Head basketball coach at Oconomowoc High School, Doug Potter made a name for himself at UW-La Crosse where he played basketball on two WSUC championship teams in 1963-64 and 1964-65. The 1963-64 team advanced to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Basketball Tournament in Kansas City, losing to Pan American University from Texas.
In addition to leading the WSUC in scoring twice (averaging nearly 20 points a game), Potter was named NAIA District 14 Player of the Year in 1963-64, NAIA Second Team All-American Player of the year in 1964-65 and captain of the 1964-65 UW-La Crosse team. A double major in physical education and mathematics, he also earned a master's degree in physical education at the university.
