Cliff DeVoll has been associated with UW-La Crosse since 1939, first as an undergraduate athlete and later as a professor, coach and administrator. As a student, he lettered in football, basketball and tennis, playing on four Wisconsin State University Conference football teams. He left for a tour of duty in the Navy, returned to graduate in 1946 and became a faculty member six years later.
As head coach of basketball (1952-67), tennis (1954-66) and assistant coach in track and football, his teams won numerous conference championships. Among them were three WSUC championship tennis titles and two in basketball. His 1963-64 basketball team was the first to represent UW-La Crosse in the NAIA Basketball Tournament when they played Pan American University from Texas. DeVoll served as Associate Dean of the College of Health, Physical Education and Recreation department at UW-L from 1967-79.
